Why natural performance wear matters

Performance wear moved to synthetic fibre decades ago, and the reasoning made sense at the time. Plastic is cheap, strong, and easy to engineer. What follows is the case for the other path — what merino wool does, how it is measured, and what it asks of you in return.


(THE FIBRE)

One material, including the mesh.

PRFORM garments are 100% merino wool. Not 95% with nylon added for stretch. Not a blend that reads better on a spec sheet. The body and the mesh ventilation panels are the same natural material.

The mesh is the part most people assume is impossible. Ventilation panels are almost always polyester, because polyester is easy to knit into an open structure that holds its shape. Building mesh from merino takes a finer yarn, a tighter knit, and more time. It costs more.

We did it because a garment that is 95% natural still puts synthetic against the skin at exactly the points where you sweat most. That is the place it matters, and it is the place the compromise usually gets made.


(WHAT IT ACTUALLY DOES)

The properties, and the claims we will not make.

Merino regulates temperature in both directions. The fibre is crimped, so it traps air when the air around you is cold and releases it when it is warm. One merino layer works across a wider range of conditions than a synthetic layer of the same weight.

It handles moisture differently to plastic. Merino absorbs moisture vapour into the fibre itself before the surface ever feels wet, which is why it stays comfortable through a temperature swing instead of turning cold and clammy.

It resists odour naturally, without a chemical finish. This is the property people notice first. A merino shirt worn three times still smells like nothing.

What we will not tell you: that merino is antibacterial, that it distributes heat optimally, or that it will make you measurably better at anything. Those claims get made constantly in this category. We have not tested them, so we do not make them. What is written above is what the fibre does.


(GSM AND MICRON)

Two numbers decide how merino behaves.

GSM is grams per square metre — the weight of the fabric. Higher GSM means more material, more warmth, more structure. Lower GSM means a lighter garment that layers without bulk.

Micron is the diameter of a single wool fibre, measured in thousandths of a millimetre. This is the number that decides whether wool feels soft or scratchy, and it is the honest answer to the itch question. Coarse wool sits at 25 micron and above, stiff enough that the fibre presses against the skin rather than bending away from it. Below roughly 18.5 micron, most people stop detecting it entirely.

Every PRFORM garment sits at or below that threshold. The quarter zip is built at 210 GSM for structure and warmth. The t-shirt and boxer briefs are 160 GSM and finer at 17.5 micron, because they sit directly against the skin for longer.

Merino asks for less than you think.

Wash cold on a wool cycle, with a detergent made for wool. Lay flat to dry. Do not tumble dry, and do not use fabric softener — it coats the fibre and undoes the properties you paid for.

Wash it less often than you would a synthetic garment. The odour resistance means most wears do not need a wash at all, and airing a garment overnight is usually enough. This is the single biggest change in how you live with the material.

Handled this way, merino improves. The fibres relax and settle into the knit over the first several wears. A well-made merino garment is better in its second year than its first.


(ACROSS DOMAINS)

One material, four contexts.

PRFORM builds a system rather than a single product because one material can carry a whole day. The properties that matter in training matter everywhere else, for different reasons.

Work asks for a garment that looks considered and does not hold the day's heat. Movement asks for temperature regulation and moisture handling under load. Travel asks for something that can be worn repeatedly without washing and packs without creasing. Recovery asks for something soft enough to stay in.

Merino answers all four without changing. That is the real argument for fewer, better garments — not owning less for its own sake, but one material genuinely covering ground that would otherwise take four.
