Merino vs Synthetic: An Honest Comparison
Look at the label on your training shirt. It probably says 100% polyester.
Polyester is polyethylene terephthalate. PET. The same polymer as a water bottle, spun into thread. It was engineered in a lab in 1941, and it does what engineered things do: it performs on paper.
Merino was not engineered. It was grown, refined by winters, on animals that had to survive them.
This is an honest comparison, not a takedown. Synthetics win in a few places, and we will tell you where. But if you train in plastic every day, you should know what the trade off actually is.
What polyester actually is
Polyester is plastic. It starts as crude oil and ends as fabric. It is cheap to produce, light, abrasion-resistant, and it dries fast. That is why most performance wear is made from it.
It has two problems the marketing does not mention.
First, it holds smell. Bacteria thrive on synthetic fiber, which is why a polyester shirt smells after one session and never fully recovers. You wash it hot, wash it often, and replace it early.
Second, it sheds. Every wash releases microplastic fibers into the water system. Researchers have found microplastics in human blood, and in 2024, in every one of the 23 human testes they sampled. What that does to male health is still being researched. The direction of the question should be enough.
What merino actually is
Merino is wool from merino sheep, with fibers fine enough to bend against your skin instead of standing against it. That is why it does not itch like the wool you remember.
The fiber evolved to regulate a living animal's temperature through seasons. It absorbs moisture as vapor before it becomes sweat on your skin. It insulates even when damp. It resists odor because bacteria do not thrive on it. And when it eventually wears out, it biodegrades, essentially it is protein, like your own hair.
No lab has matched this. Most have stopped trying and started blending it in.
The comparison
Temperature. Polyester traps heat and moves liquid sweat. Merino regulates before sweat happens, warm when it is cold, cool when it is warm, and still insulating when wet. There is a reason it has kept people alive in weather that kills.
Odor. A synthetic shirt is done after one session. Merino can train all week. Fewer washes, less friction in your life, and a garment that lasts longer because it is washed less.
Washing and lifespan. Polyester survives machine abuse but pills, sags, and holds smell permanently. Merino asks for more respect — cold, gentle, air dry — and gives back years. Care is not a burden. It is the habit of a man who owns fewer, better things.
The body. Polyester does not only shed in the wash. The plastic carries chemical additives, and against hot, sweating skin they leach out into your sweat — where skin absorbs them. Lab studies on human-skin models found that sweatier skin takes up markedly more than dry skin. Training is exactly when you are hottest, wettest, and most open. Merino sheds wool. The earth knows what to do with wool, and so does your body.
Weight and drying. Polyester is lighter and dries faster. True, and worth saying.
Cost. Polyester wins on price per garment. Merino wins on price per wear. Count the washes, the replacements, and the number of shirts you actually need. High achievers count differently.
Where synthetics still win
A rain shell should be synthetic. Wool is not a rain jacket. A race-day singlet where every gram counts, maybe. And if price decides everything, polyester serves.
